How to turn change into a competitive advantage?

We made it! We made what?

We’ve been trying to fit it in our agenda for a few years now: Participating at the Berlin Change Days (BCD), one of the largest European events on Change Management. And this year we finally made it! During the Halloween weekend, we settled down in Berlin to find out about the newest trends and must have’s in Change Management today.

To change or to disrupt? That’s the question!

With “disruption” being one of the hot buzz words, the BCD team strategically chose to focus the conference on “The Art of Disruption”. How are the world, our economy, organizations and even individuals being disrupted by both external and internal factors? Is change today different from change many years ago? How disruptively different do we need to address change management in the future from change management in the past? And how will changes evolve over time?

Change has always been around

The best is to start with stating that change has never changed – say what?! Yes, indeed, the constant about change is that it has always been around. To clarify the crux of the matter, let’s travel back in time. Evolution and inventions have been part of human life even before the homo erectus could stand up straight. I can’t recall the exact name of the inventor of fire but one thing is for sure: He changed his family’s life! Next Mr. Homo Sapiens mastered agriculture and what a change emerged! Nomads stopped roaming the land and formed settlements. Who was there to guide them through this huge change curve of Kübler-Ross? I don’t think they had a communication plan in mind, neither had they designed a training strategy. What about this popular saying to ‘not re-invent the wheel’? Well, luckily there was one crazy guy who did invent the wheel one day! Anyway, this all happened without change management explicitly being addressed. And it worked out just fine…

Then what has changed?

All facts we listed above are covering more than 5 million years of (r)evolution. Though the impact of the changes was huge, the pace at which they emerged was slow.

Today we are facing a different challenge. In a period of less than 300 years (!), we have survived three industrial revolutions and are heading the fourth one. Just imagine fire, agriculture and the wheel being invented in less than 300 years! — For the engineers, that is only 1/16667th or 0,006% of the time our ancestors had! –

Now let’s jump back in time. Imagine Mr. H. Sapiens didn’t have the time to master fire. Imagine him building houses and wheels of wood while trying to drag around a bonfire… Our homo ‘not so sapiens’ would have been caught in a loop where he was burning down his houses having to reinvent the wheel he just constructed… Sad, isn’t?!

And that’s when Buzz comes to life!

The above pleas for Disruptive Change to be real. We expect everyone to live in the fast lane and adapt to global changes on the go. This trend of disruption is not only a buzz word; incremental is out, disruptive is in! With the introduction of digitalization, companies need to adapt faster. Agility and resilience have become key characteristics of successful entities today. Whether companies will survive the next disruptive jump will depend on the flexible capabilities of their resources, processes and values. Companies that can turn change into an advantage are the ones that no longer view change as a discrete event to be managed, but as a constant opportunity to evolve the business.


The current pace of change is so fast and the potential productivity gains are so high that we have lost the convenience to leave it up to the next generation to adapt to these changes. Makes sense, doesn’t it? But not everyone is hooked up yet. And this is exactly where we help our customers with the MOUNTK methodology.
